Authorities this week identified a Lakeside man whose body was discovered about 24 hours after he crashed his motorcycle into a ravine off Interstate 8.
Eugene John Flannigan, 61, is believed to have crashed Wednesday evening while riding his 2009 Kawasaki Concourse west on Interstate 8 near Willows Road, according to the California Highway Patrol and Medical Examiner’s Office. The CHP said another motorist called 911 just before 6 p.m. that evening to report that a rider lost control of his motorcycle and careened off the freeway.
But CHP officers, firefighters and a sheriff’s helicopter crew who searched for the wreckage Wednesday night along a long stretch of west I-8 were unable to find evidence of a crash.
Around 5:10 p.m. the next day, Thursday, sheriff’s deputies alerted the CHP that a fatal motorcycle crash scene had been discovered between I-8 and Willows Road a little west of Viejas Casino & Resort.
Authorities found Flannigan dead at the scene. The Medical Examiner’s Office said he died of multiple blunt force injuries.
