Harry Wagy Obituary – Harry Gene Wagy, age 73, of Quincy, IL. passed away Monday, January 10, 2022 at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, IL. He was born in Pittsfield, IL, December 23, 1948, to Maurice and Harriet Wagy. He married Dixie Vannatta on June 20, 1970, and she survives. Harry graduated from Barry High School in 1966. He attended Robert Morris Jr College for two years, and then went on to receive his Bachelor’s degree from what is now Truman State University.
He began working at Nebo Elementary school as a teacher and coached junior high basketball. He moved to coaching at Pleasant Hill junior high, where his team made it to 2nd in state. Harry taught and coached from 1978 to 1999 at Pleasant Hill high school. He was a member of the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and was named coach of the year one time. In 1999, he began working at the Pittsfield work camp as an educator, where he retired from in 2003. After retirement, he began sports broadcasting and started Coaches Corner which aired every Saturday.
Harry enjoyed watching the Atlanta Braves, golfing, and playing music. He had a band, the T-Zers that he played keyboard for and sang lead. He loved his former students, talking to them and remembered the year they graduated. He loved telling stories. Most of all, he loved his family and grandkids. He was especially close to his maternal grandmother, Nonie.
Harry is survived by; his wife, Dixie Wagy; daughter Candria Elsa (Daniel) French; son, Richard “Richie” Jamison Wagy; grandchildren, Alexandra (Dillon) Wainman, Gabrielle Moore, Baylee (Willie) Thornton, and Derick (Zoe Littleton)Thornton; and great grandchildren, Connor Wainman, Easton Wainman, and baby to be Wainman; and two step brothers.
He was preceded in death by; his parents, Maurice and Harriet Wagy; Uncle Bill Wagy; grandparents, Harry and Elsah “Nonie” Hadsell; and grandparents Ellis and Lillian Wagy.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 13, 2022 from 11:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. with services at 2:00 P.M. Interment following service at Parklawn Cemetery in Barry, IL.
