How Did James Anderson Die? – Cause of Death

James Anderson, 48, of Thompson, allegedly called the Winnebago County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday to report an assault at his home in the 100 block of Van Buren Street. A deputy says when he got to the scene, he encountered Anderson armed with a loaded 9mm handgun.

The DCI says Anderson refused to drop his weapon as law enforcement negotiated with him for nearly 10 minutes and eventually was shot once when he pointed his gun in the direction of officers. Anderson later died from his wound.

The DCI was called in to investigate this officer-involved shooting and says Anderson was apparently despondent over a recent medical diagnosis. The results of the full investigation will be sent to the Winnebago County Attorney’s Office and the Iowa Attorney General’s Office for review.

The officer who hot Anderson has been placed on administrative leave.
