RIP Chi Pig. Got to see them at Club Caribe at 2nd and Jackson behind Dan’s house in 87 and later open for them in 88 at WOW Hall with Snakepit. One of the best live bands ever.

Saw Chi Pig in gastown one morning when I was walking my dog. He said “beautiful dog”, and I said “I like your skirt”. A classic #vancouver moment. #RIPChiPig

I interviewed Chi Pig in 2008 for one of my first music columns in a major paper. He didn’t pick up at the scheduled time, or after several more attempts, sending me into a slight panic before I finally got him on the phone at midnight the day of deadline.
I was freelancing for the Edmonton Sun at the time, and when I introduced myself he said “I fucking hate the Sun.” (I put that in the article but an editor cut it.) I was already nervous talking to someone I looked up to as a punk legend, and that threw me for a loop. 2/7
Thankfully, the call turned friendly and we had a strange, fun and interesting chat as he colourfully answered my questions between sips of beer. I wrote the column in the wee hours of the morning and apologized to my editor for the lateness.
The next day, my editor Jenny Feniak called me into her office and said she was impressed by my persistence and the fact I pulled it off. She offered me a regular weekly column interviewing whatever bands I wanted to. I kept that gig for 8 years.
So, in a weird way, Chi Pig’s tardiness really helped along my journalism career. I never knew him personally beyond that, but I was always grateful for that interview.
I’ll end my musing with this clip, because it’s one of the first SNFU songs I heard and I also think it highlights Chi’s masterful storytelling and uncanny ability to blend irreverent dark humour with genuine emotion. 6/7 https://t.co/B1nuMdoZxK
