You can tell by the voice on the other end it isn’t good news. Got that call last night about my wife’s 18 yr old great nephew. Levi died yesterday in an ATV accident. He’s been working for us since last harvest. The two of us have been especially close during this time. and I was really anxious to watch him take his next steps with community college this next week. There’s a hole in our hearts and I thank God that I had that time with Levi and only the Almighty can heal that hurt.

This happened in my town, the whole community is devastated by this. Rip Levi Beenken
I’ve waited all day to post something, waiting for the right words to come to me, they haven’t and I’m not sure they will. Yesterday our employee, cousin, friend, nephew, in some ways little brother Levi Beenken died in an ATV accident. He graduated early from high school and has been working with us virtually every day since last harvest. He was working on getting his CDL, was to start Hawkeye CC tomorrow. I’m not sure it’s really hit me yet, and maybe it won’t until that old beater car that some how kept running doesn’t pull into the farm tomorrow. He was so damn happy this summer working with us and with his Grandpa Jim. He left work Friday excited to go take his girlfriend out for her birthday. He had everything in front of him and had shown the willingness to work to get whatever he wanted. I’ll miss the laughing at our bad jokes, and wrenches and tools left everywhere just like I would’ve done it. I’ll miss the willingness to run any piece of equipment we asked and the lunch run buddy. I’ll have an extra tenderloin and Dr Pepper for you on Thursday. Love you bud.

This afternoon’s gathering was one that nobody wanted to have, but one we needed to have. Students, Alumni, and even Levi’s family turned out to support each other in our time of shock and sorrow. This young man will be missed. Here is the prayer I shared this afternoon:
We are so grateful that you have made us in your own image, giving us gifts and talents with which to serve you.
Thank you for Levi, and thank you for the years we shared with him. Thank you for the memories which no one can ever take away. We lift Levi up to you, and we ask your blessing on all who knew him.
Today we ask you to help Levi’s family and loved ones. We ask you to be with us as we struggle with our grief. May we find joy in our memories, hope in your love, and peace through the pain. May you walk beside us, filling our emptiness with your presence.
Please give us the strength to trust Levi in your care, in the knowledge of eternal life through your son, Jesus Christ. In His name we pray.
