Matthew John Gnacinski Obituary, Death

Matthew John Gnacinski, 39, of Erie, passed away on Friday, January 21, 2022, at St. Vincent Hospital, due to complications from COVID-19. Born in Erie, Pa., on September 4, 1982, he was the beloved second son of Paul and Kathleen (McCooey) Gnacinski, loving husband of Shannon (Peterson) Gnacinski, and devoted father of Sophia, Claire, and Amelia Gnacinski.

Matt’s devout Catholic faith and active membership in St. Andrew parish sustained his strong will to live. Although he was diagnosed with Granulomatosis with polyangiitis in 2005, a diagnosis that led to two kidney transplants, heart valve replacement surgery, and eight years of dialysis, he never complained or let his health setbacks take his focus away from being the best brother, son, husband, and father that he could be.

Matt was an outstanding student and athlete at St. Andrew School and Villa Maria Academy. He went on to play both pitcher and catcher for Youngstown State University’s Division I baseball team. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Communications in 2006. He continued his education at the LECOM School of Pharmacy, where he earned his Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2014. Following his graduation from LECOM, he was employed as a pharmacist at Tops Pharmacy and most recently at CVS Pharmacy.

Baseball was another of Matt’s loves. Inspired by his dad’s success on the diamond, Matt spent most of his childhood and teenage years in dugouts all around Erie. As an adult, he played in the Glenwood League with his brothers. Baseball is a passion that unites the Gnacinski boys, and the memories he made with his teammates and the lessons he learned on the field helped shape the man he grew up to be.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, James and Margaret Gnacinski, and his maternal grandparents, Henry and Mary Kaye McCooey.

In addition to his parents, wife and, daughters, Matt is survived by his four brothers, Phillip Gnacinski (Heather), of Davenport, Fla., David Gnacinski, of Montgomery, Ala., Kevin Gnacinski (Jordan), of Brookville, Pa., and Joseph Gnacinski, of Erie; two sisters-in-law, Megan Kapsa (Nick), of Virginia Beach, Va., and Haley Hadden, of Erie; and a brother-in-law, Ethan Peterson, of Erie. Numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends are also left to cherish his memory.

Family and friends are invited to call at Brugger Funeral Homes & Crematory, 1595 West 38th Street, on Tuesday, January 25th, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., and may attend a funeral Mass at St. Andrew Church, 1116 West 7th Street, on Wednesday, January 26, at 10:00 a.m. Private interment will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery at a later date.
