Olexiy Solohubenko ran the Ukrainian Service when I first joined the BBC many years ago. My first first real job. For years I relied on his support and advice. Only later I realised what he was – a champion, with kindness and wit and knowledge. Земля пухом, Олексію.

Very sad to hear that one of my former managers, Olexiy Solohubenko has passed away. We had many humorous moments – seen here in the middle taking it in stride as I interrupted an editorial meeting with a hedgehog. RIP.

A couple of years ago, I worked with Olexiy @solohubenko for a few months. I couldn’t have asked for a nicer, more caring or more inspiring boss. He was a quick witted, knowledgeable journalist and all-round gentleman, who sadly passed away today.

I’m so sad that my friend and colleague Olexiy Solohubenko has died. He was the head of BBC Ukrainian and latterly news editor for World Service Languages until his retirement. He was extremely kind and generous with his time when I first worked in the WS. In his long career he had seen extraordinary things. He had reported from Chernobyl, and had known Georgi Markov, before he was murdered. He had seemingly read every newspaper, including some in languages he didn’t speak! He was a great Bush House figure, I’ll miss him. RIP
