Robert Brown Death – A Rhode Island Department of Corrections officer was killed in a crash on Tuesday. According to South Kingstown Police, on Tuesday at approximately 5:00 p.m., members of the South Kingstown Police Department, Charlestown Police Department, South Kingstown Emergency Medical services and surrounding Fire Departments, responded to Route 1 southbound in the area of Moonstone Beach Road for a report of a wrong way driver.
The vehicle, later identified as a 2019 Buick Encore, was driving northbound in the southbound lane of travel, which resulted in a head on collision involving 3 vehicles.
The operator of the wrong way vehicle has been identified as 56-year-old Rhode Island Corrections Inspector Robert Brown, from Cranston, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The operators of the other two involved vehicles have been identified as 59-year-old Lisa Brunetti, from Charlestown, and 47-year-old Stephen Hatch, also from Charlestown.
Brunetti was transported to Rhode Island Hospital via Life Flight helicopter for her injuries which are severe, but appear to be non-life threatening. Hatch received minor injuries from the crash and was able to leave the scene without incident.
According to Director Patricia Coyne-Fague, Brown served with the Cranston Police Department, rising to the rank of Captain until retiring in 2007. He worked in the office of internal affairs at the Wyatt Detention Center before joining the RIDOC Office of Inspections in 2013.
