A 71-year-old man has been identified as the shooting suspect killed in a Memorial Day exchange of gunfire with a police officer in Chilton County.
The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency on Tuesday identified the slain man as Roger Dale Keller.
Jemison officers were dispatched at 11:30 a.m. Monday to a residence on County Road 954 on a report of a person with a gun threatening to shoot two other males in the front yard, said Chief Shane Fulmer.
Before officers arrived on the scene, according to witnesses, the man had already fired multiple shots.
A Jemison officers was first on the scene, the chief said, and saw the male with a gun in the front yard. As the officer got out of his patrol vehicle, the suspect – now identified as Keller – turned toward the officer.
Shots were fired by both the Keller and the officer. The officer was not injured, but Keller was pronounced dead on the scene.
