Honorable Steven P Elliott

Reno – Honorable Steven P. Elliott, 72, died January 5, 2021 in Reno, Nevada after a brief battle with cancer. Judge Elliott was known to family and friends simply as “The Judge”.

Steve Elliott was born on April 22, 1948 in Hawthorne, California to Ben and Helen Elliott and grew up in Mammoth Lakes, CA. The Judge began his education attending Choate Rosemary Hall prep school in Connecticut. He was a 1971 graduate of Stanford University and received his law degree from the University of Denver, Sturm College of Law in 1975. Upon graduation, familiarity with Reno and affection for the city brought him here after law school. He worked for the firm, Echeverria and Osborne. He started work for the City of Sparks as the city prosecutor in 1977. He was elected as the Sparks City Attorney in 1979 and held that office for 17 years. In 1996, he was elected a Judge of the Second Judicial District Court of Washoe County where he would preside over Department 10 of the Court until March 2013.

Judge Elliott was the founding director of the Washoe County Domestic Violence Task Force and served on the Nevada Statewide Court Security Task Force to improve the security for judges and the public at courthouses throughout Nevada.

In addition, The Judge served on the Board of Directors for the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and was the President of the Sparks Traffic Survival School. The Judge was active with the Reno Rotary Club, Sparks Sertoma, Reno Ski and Recreational Club and volunteered every year to help with the Barracuda Championship golf tournament. In 2012, The Judge was elected to the serve on the ArrowCreek HOA Board where he served until 2015.

The Judge was a member of The Club at Arrowcreek where he was active in the Men’s Golf Club. In fact, his crowning golf achievement was fulfilled in 2020 when he won and became the Match Play Sage Flight Champion. He was an avid skier, golfer, and traveler and his family paid this tribute to him, “The Judge was one of the most thoughtful and considerate people you could ever meet. He treated his work with unmatched fairness and compassion, and approached life with boundless curiosity and love.”

Throughout his lifetime he traveled to six of the seven continents in search of lifelong learning and adventure. One his lifetime achievements was to visit Tibet and the basecamp of Mt. Everest, which he successfully did in 2019.

Judge Elliott was still serving the people of Nevada as a Senior Judge where he enjoyed traveling throughout the State working with the various Judges and judicial staff. In the end, the Judge continued to care about the people of Nevada being an organ donor in which tissue was donated following his passing to help others.

Judge Elliott is survived by his wife Mendy, and his sons Ben, Derek (Cara) and Nick Vander Poel (Christi Quatro) and four grandchildren Ben, Jr., Ethan, Emily and Mason plus his furry friend Rosie.

The Elliott family would like to personally thank Dr. Ritu Dixon for her tireless devotion to The Judge and his fight. Also, to the Renown Medial staff for their kindness and professionalism.

The Judge was cremated according to his wishes and his ashes will be scattered by his family at a later date. Due to COVID-related concerns, we will gather to celebrate The Judge’s life when it is safe to do so.
