Statement by Federal Reserve Board Chair Jerome H. Powell on the passing of Thomas Laubach, director of the Division of Monetary Affairs

I will miss Thomas as both a colleague and a friend. He was a world-class economist, committed to public service and universally respected for his significant contributions to the theory and practice of monetary policy. His expertise, intellect, and good judgment were peerless. His many friends and colleagues will miss not only his nimble, creative mind, but also his unfailing kindness, collegiality and equanimity. My colleagues and I extend our deepest sympathies to his family.

Volker Wieland wrote;

These are very sad news. Thomas Laubach was a great economist, a very influential policy adviser and most importantly a thoughtful and kind human being. From 2008 to 2012 we had the great honor to have him as a colleague in the Macroeconomics Department at Goethe University.

Sebastian Schmidt wrote;

This is very sad. Thomas was my 2nd PhD supervisor at Goethe U, and taught me monetary economics. Tai’s memories very much resonate with my own. Thomas deeply cared about his students. I remember sitting in his office discussing a term paper. I had submitted it early, and he invited me to his office to give some feedback. Together we went through his annotated comments page by page, and he encouraged me to extend it to a full research paper. I did not take long, and there were long queues in front of his office during his office hours. When he took over as Director of the PhD program, he aimed to foster the interaction between students and faculty members. I will treasure the regular gatherings on Campus Westend with him and fellow students. The last time I met Thomas was about 2 years ago, when we met by chance in the S-Bahn and walked together to the ECB. He was as kind and encouraging as ever. R.I.P. Thomas Laubach.
